In 2016, renowned artist Richard Woods designed a unique swimming pool for an installation at Albion Barn in Oxford.
This ‘wooden’ swimming pool is made up of large format porcelain tiles, each custom printed with a wood grain effect in a block print style.
We worked with Richard to achieve the striking colours in his recognisable artwork transferred onto the tiles. The colours are UV safe so won’t fade outside in the sunlight, remaining as vibrant as they were on the day they were installed. The tiles have then been over-glazed with a commercially rated anti-slip coating.
Richard’s distinctive style and use of bold colours looks very dramatic in the English garden setting at Albion Barn in Oxford, the finished pool is stunning!
LONDON ZOO, MARCH 2016
In 2014, Rosey Taylor, Designer and Illustrator, and Tom Sears from the Zoological Society of London came to Tiled Space with the idea for a custom tiled mural for the new Lion Enclosure, ‘Land of the Lions’ at London Zoo. We worked together with Rosey and Tom and developed the idea into this amazing permanent outdoor art piece. Digitally printed onto the 1078 tiles across nearly 25 square metres, the design is based on India’s vibrant Sasan Gir National Park, and also includes the names of sponsors who made donations to the ZSL. As it was an exterior installation it was essential that the printed tiles would not fade in sunlight and would be durable in all weather conditions including frost and rain. The porcelain tile surface is scratch resistant – even from the Lion’s claws! In March 2016, ‘Land of the Lions’ was officially opened by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
'WESTON GARDEN' STEPPING STONES
In April 2015 Tiled Space worked with renowned architect and author Richard Weston on his digital arts and crafts project, ‘Weston Garden.’ Richard has created a sunken outdoor room which includes a water feature with stepping stones of bespoke printed tiles with images of Moroccan agate. The images were digitally printed onto porcelain 390x390mm tiles suitable for exterior use and finished with an anti-slip coating.
Srebrenica Memorial Tile Plaques
In June 2016 we were honoured to be asked by community arts organisation The Cultural Sisters to produce plaques to mark 21 years since the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia. The plaques were part of an outdoor memorial at YMCA North Staffordshire designed by young people. Vitrified tiles suitable for exterior use were digitally printed and waterjet cut into eleven circular disks ready to be set straight into the cement.
Public Art Project in California
In October 2014, our American agent based in California was contacted by the Public Art Program for the city of Oakland in California to produce a custom tiled mural for a public art project for the local Youth Centre. The chosen artist for this collaborative art project was visual artist Robert Trujillo for his recognisable striking illustrations which are bright and colourful.
The hand decorated porcelain tile mural is made up small and large sections and is over 30 square metres and looks very striking. It has made such an impact to the appearance of the exterior of the building and best of all it won’t even fade in the Californian sunshine!
